I read an article one time that had interviewed a bunch of bjj blackbelts and then listed a top 50 things every bjj player should do before the end of their career. One of them was learning to surf. I didn’t quite understand the logic when I read it, except for hey, it could be fun. But being from the midwest, there isn’t a whole lot of opportunity to surf other than on the web. Yesterday at class it kind of made sense to me. Yesterday’s class was my first day back after missing almost 2 weeks from being sick. It was good to get back out and roll again. No technique training. Just rolling. Me, Bryce, Dan, and Eric, round robin sparred the entire class. Pretty much just rolled easy, letting the roll take me where I wanted to be. No forced movements, just smooth Jiu Jitsu. Bryce and Dan were both commenting me on my cardio, and were very surprised I didn’t gas on them. I didn’t aggravate my elbow, which was good. And my positional game was on point. But my highlight of class for me was dealing with my bad positions when rolling with Eric. Granted, he was much lighter on me then my last class, but any time I found myself in a bad spot, I just thought to myself, “It’s ok. You’ll be out of here in a little while.” I was surprised how well that worked. Lloyd Irving was right, positive mental attitude is a huge advantage when rolling. I’m off to my last class for the week. Tomorrow, a guy from my gym, Aussie, is fighting at my workplace. Should he win the fight, he will be the champion at 145 lbs in 3 fight organizations in the upper midwest. WAR AUS!!! WAR!!!

Could the Surfing also be the same in waiting out for the perfect move. When I watched the FightQuest on BJJ it seemed that they were taught to be patient and wait to find the perfect way out of a situation. With a surfer it would be being patient to find the perfect wave. Timing Dan, it’s all about timing. Good work, missed you’re blog updates, glad you’re back at it!
